From autobiography to big screen debut, rapper, author and spoken word artist Abd Al Malik brings his challenging and ultimately inspiring story to life in sobering black-and-white. Raised by a single mother, Malik (played by Marc Zinga) navigates one of the harshest projects of 80’s era Strasbourg by leading a double life; a life that cultivates his mental intellect, by being rewarded a scholarship at an esteemed area high school, while building his street cred stealing, selling drugs and sharpening his MC skills at the local clubs of Neuhof. When tragic violence finds its way into his world, he must make a choice that truly defines his path. Set against the wall of sound provided by Malik, musicians Bilal, Wallen, and his French electronic music producer colleague Laurent Garnier, ensures the stage is properly set for an arresting voice, uniquely its own.
The film won the Discovery Award at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival. -Drew Waller
